Mosate Selao, also referred to as Port Selao, is a location in Far Cry 2.

History[]

Mosate Selao is the capital city of the Unnamed African Country. The city was built up on the shores of Lake Segolo which made it a prominent shipping hub prior to the civil war. This is reflected in its nickname "Port Selao." The city was most likely originally founded during the UAC's colonial period, as all of the buildings and structures in the city are built in a very distinctive colonial-style architecture. Considering how many tall buildings there are in the city and the city's capital status, it can be safe to assume that this was the most populated city in the UAC prior to the civil war.

Up until the civil war, the city was home to a local newspaper called the Port Selao Daily Standard. It was presumably forced to stop operating some time after the war started, as the building it was headquartered in is now occupied by the APR.

Layout[]

It's located directly in the center of the district. The headquarters of both factions can be found here. The UFLL's HQ is located on the right side of town, while the APR's is located on the left. There is also a clinic near the center of the town which serves as the main Underground location in Bowa-Seko.

Mosate Selao is considerably richer and much more developed when compared to the town of Pala, as the structures are more complete and built taller, and the fencing and vegetation inside the town have been made in a more organized manner. The roads in the city are also fully paved and feature sidewalks, which are completely unlike the unpaved dirt roads you frequently come across in the rest of the game. The architectural style of the buildings is reminiscent of colonial African architecture, which reflects the wealthiness of the city and the history of the region as a whole. Pavillions and public spaces can also be found everywhere in the city, further reflecting the wealthiness. Many Jeep Libertys can be found here as well, instead of the usual cars you find in the other two settlements.

However, while the city is indeed much more wealthy than the other two main settlements in the country, it still suffers from problems of its own. The roads and sidewalks are covered in litter and piles of trash. Destroyed cars and trucks can also be found all over the city which were presumably the result of skirmishes and battles taking place during the early stages of the civil war.

A few buildings have ladders providing roof access. The player can climb on top of them to get a vantage point. Like Sefapane, this city also contains a large church. It's located in the south central side of the city and has a fully accessible church tower. It can be used as a good sniping position during combat.

As with the other two towns in the game, Mosate Selao is a cease fire zone. There are also two restricted zones here. Both are located in the north side of town and are on the opposite sides of one another.

Role in-game[]

Mosate Selao fulfills the same role that Pala did in the north. It's the main town in the Bowa-Seko where you recieve faction missions.

At the beginning of Act 2, the player first arrives in Port Selao under the orders of either Hector Voorhees or Nick Greaves. They explain that with Leboa-Sako being taken over by the opposing faction, a ceasefire agreement between the two factions came into place. The advent of the ceasefire means all hired guns in the country risk losing their jobs or even possibly being executed as the factions see them as being useless now that there's no more fighting going on. They want to ensure that it doesn't ever come to that, so they enlist the player to partake in a false flag operation at Port Selao. Hidden at the island of Sehlakalase is a barge filled to the brim with the Jackal's weapons and ammunition. The barge is marked with the opposing faction's insignias, so if all goes according to plan, when the barge arrives at Port Selao the allied faction will assume the opposing faction has been secretly dealing with the Jackal, thus breaking the ceasefire agreement. The player then sets off to meet up with a mercenary aboard the barge and shortly after meeting they set sail. Along the way, they get attacked by mercenaries, but they successfully manage to fend them off and port at Mosate Selao without any issue. Both factions quickly catch wind of the barge's arrival and the ceasefire agreement is effectively broken. The player then meets up with Undergound contact Doctor Obua to warn him about the end of the ceasefire and the civil war starting up again.

Trivia[]

  • There are three diamond cases to be found here
    • The first can be found inside of the church tower.
    • The second is located on the balcony of a two-storey building in the centre of the city. Getting it is a bit difficult. First you need to climb a ladder placed on the backside of a different building near it and then you have to jump onto a thatched shelter below the building. Finally you can walk on top of it to the balcony and grab the diamond.
    • The third can be found inside of a red shipping container at the docks south of the city.
  • "Mosate" (actually spelled mošate) is a word in numerous Southern African Bantu languages (including Northern Sotho, the language most spoken in the UAC) that roughly translates as "royal village" or "capital city." In other words, the name of this city literally translates to "the capital city of Selao."
  • Reuben Oluwagembi's blog War Unlimited depicts Port Selao as being much, much larger than it actually is in-game. Interestingly enough, the blog also depicts Reuben staying at a hotel in Port Selao called "Hotel Evelyn" that looks eerily similar to the hotel seen in Pala.
