Binoculars, also called Binocs, are an important piece of equipment in Far Cry and Far Cry 5, since they can be used by the player to scan the surrounding environment for nearby hostiles in the terrain.

They have an incredibly long range, with up to 24x magnification. Upon detecting an enemy with the Binoculars, their location will appear on the player's radar as a small triangle. The markers' colour changes depending on how aware of the player's presence the enemies are:

  • Green — The enemy is not aware of the player's presence.
  • Yellow — The enemy is more alert than before and is on the lookout for anything suspicious.
  • Orange — The enemy knows that something is wrong and will be actively seeking out the player.
  • Red — The enemy knows of the player's position and will most likely be shooting at him.

In addition to their visual function, the binocs can also enhance distant sounds and allow the player to eavesdrop on the mercenaries' conversations from a safe distance. This is possible either thanks to the locators with which all members of the Krieger Corporation have been fitted with or due to the binoc's intrinsic ability to detect sound waves and make them audible to the user. The information acquired this way is not useful to the player in terms of gameplay but provides trivia relating to the plot.

The default for accessing the binoculars is B for the PC (Far Cry) and up on the D-Pad for the console (Far Cry Classic).

Appearances[]

The Binoculars can first be found a short way into Training, the first level of Far Cry, in a small hut on a hill just past the first enemy encampment. The mercs are never seen using the binocs themselves.
